How to clean your reborn doll?

You might be here because you just got a reborn child size doll and you’re wondering if you can bathe it. You also might be looking into purchasing a silicone doll and wondering the same thing.
You may already have one and are wondering if you’re bathing it the proper way. If your doll has gotten dirty, you may be wondering, “how do I clean my silicone doll?”.
While reborn baby dolls are generally made with durable material that can withstand years of play and sometimes manhandling, you still need to be extra careful when it comes to cleaning them. From harsh cleaning materials to negligent cleaning techniques, you may end up ruining the doll in a bid to clean it if you aren’t too careful. Thus maintaining reborn dolls in a nice and clean condition requires special care and knowledge of how to take care of them. To be a true rebirth doll lover, buying a reborn baby doll is just the beginning. Here are some tips on how to clean up and take care of your doll.

How do you give your reborn baby a bath?

So, what about its maintenance and how can a person actually keep reborn dolls clean?
It’s always advised to follow the guidelines given by the reborn doll makers, in order to avoid damage as well as wear and tear.
We are going to discuss some ways in which a person can give his or her reborn baby doll a bath and clean it from all the angles!

What things do you need to bathe your silicone reborn doll?

Location: You may use a sink, a basin, a bathtub, or a baby bathtub. This is all preference. Many people prefer to purchase a baby bathtub as it is sized for use for a baby and it also adds a more realistic factor for bath time with your silicone.

Towel: We recommend using a light-colored, soft baby towel. Dark colors may bleed into the silicone, especially when it is wet. The softer the towel, the gentler it will be on the delicate, silicone skin.

Washcloth: Again, a soft, light-colored washcloth is best. This will prevent dark colors from staining your silicone’s skin. Baby washcloths are usually the best way to go.

Soap: Mild, gentle, scent-less soap is the best. Many people use baby soap and that is completely fine. The milder and gentler = the better and easier it will be on your silicone’s skin.

Q-Tips: If you have a doll whose mouth opens and closes, q-tips are helpful for drying out their mouth post-bath.

Powder: Utilizing powder is very common for reborn silicone baby doll. Powder decreases the shine of silicone and can also help with decreasing its likelihood of attracting hair, fuzz, or lint.

Powder also creates a more lifelike feel to the skin and keeps the doll smelling fresh and baby-like.

Many people use regular baby powder or purchase powders from special silicone doll shops.

Avoid using scented powders, the perfumes and oils in these may cause staining of the silicone.

Powder Brush: In order to evenly apply the powder, use a powder brush. You can use a regular makeup or blush brush. Use a brand new one that has not had any other harsh products on it that may harm your silicone’s skin.

Diaper/Clothes: Again, this is preference. Whether it’s a dress or overalls, whatever you decide to dress your baby in is the perfect choice!

Steps to Clean your reborn doll

The first thing to note is that, in reality, you can’t actually give your reborn doll bath. Well, dolls have their own dynamics, and it’s likely that you will end damaging your doll with excessive water, or rubbing.

So, what is the right way of cleaning a reborn doll? These were some of the tips, for keeping your reborn dolls clean and safe!

1.Using the right cleaner or spray
reborn-baby-doll-bathing-5First of all, if you are using some cleaner or spray, then don’t make that mistake of applying it everywhere on the doll. Well, it’s possible that the chemicals of your spray do not suit the vinyl of the doll, and spoil it.

Therefore, just apply it at a single spot and then see if it is not spoiling the colour or vinyl.

2.Scrubbing
reborn-baby-doll-bathing-3Moving ahead, you will find that with most reborn dolls, there isn’t really a cleaning solution out there in the market. Like, you cannot clean them like other dolls and toys. And for removing stains, it’s highly recommended that you use a slightly wet plain cloth, and rub it gently wherever required.

Scrubbing is also to be avoided as it can damage the outer layer and paint of the doll. Therefore, just rub a plain, slightly wet cloth gently on the stain, and it will be cleaned.

3.Seeking professional help from the makers of your reborns

Well, they are the makers of that doll and they will surely know it better than you. So, do not take risks and seek professional help is the main point. It is likely that your doll would have taken excessive dirt and therefore, it might even need some changes, etc. So, seek professional help wherever needed.

That’s also the reason why, it is always advised to keep your reborn baby doll far away from objects that can stain it. As it’s said that, precautions are always better than cures.

4.Keeping away from stains and mishandle
reborn-baby-doll-bathing-4Reborn baby dolls are sometimes costly, and so is their vinyl. Therefore, it’s never guaranteed that your doll will get cleaned completely. And therefore, it’s important to keep it away from stains and mishandle!

But the basic tip is to gently rub the stain with a slightly wet cloth, so that the stain is cleaned quite easily.

How to get rid of moldy smell on reborn doll

Musty odors—bad smells caused by the growth of mold and mildew—can happen to any object stored in a dark, damp place for too long

How To Remove Musty Smells

This includes precious keepsakes like reborn dolls, items that can’t be tossed in the washer and may be difficult to thoroughly clean without risking damage. When this happens, choose one of several gentler ways to wash and deodorize your doll, depending on what it’s made of and how severe the problem is.
The first thing to do is to get your doll out of the area where it’s been stored. Chances are, this area is the source of the musty smell (caused by growth of things like mold and mildew) and is probably infested with a smell of its own, especially if it’s a small space. Just getting the doll out of here and letting it air out for a few days may be enough to remove the bulk of the smell.

If not, try bringing the doll outside where the air is more open. Choose a sunny day to let the doll sit in the sun, as the sunlight will help to kill odor-causing growth.

For dolls that still smell bad, try placing the doll for a few days in a clean, dry and relatively closed container, but this time, store it with some substances that will absorb the unpleasant odor or replace it. This can include dishes of baking soda or vinegar, vanilla extract, clean cat litter (designed to absorb odor) or coffee grounds.

Drastic Measures

For times when basic odor-removing steps aren’t enough, more involved cleaning methods are required. The best way to go about this will depend on your reborn doll and what it’s made of—for example, a reborn doll may need to be hand washed in a gentle hand soap (add about a quarter cup of baking soda to a basin as well for some extra odor removing). If this still doesn’t work, consider sending the doll to a dry-cleaner, but take care if it’s fragile or very old.
Dolls that are a combination of cloth can be hand washed, but sending them to a dry-cleaner is a little tricky. You may have to consider dismantling the doll temporarily (or having a skilled sewer do it for you); carefully remove the head and limbs with a seam ripper, then sew the body closed again before sending it to be cleaned (you may also consider replacing the body entirely if it’s of a simple construction).
Other types of dolls made of porous materials may smell but be more difficult to wash, such as dolls made from wicker or dried corn husks. These fragile reborn baby doll kits probably can’t be washed, so try a product specially designed for removing must smells from things that can’t be washed, such as OdorXit CLO2, a spray often used for deodorizing the pages of musty books .

How to clean reborn doll hair

Your baby’s hair was hand-rooted one to a few strands at a time to look like the fine hairs on a real baby.
The hair was then sealed with a water-proof adhesive to keep it from falling out.  However, baby hair is still delicate and requires a little TLC (Tender Love and Care).  These tips and tutorials will help you keep your baby’s hair shiny, fresh and beautiful for years to come.
Wash your baby’s hair as often as you like.  Just keep in mind that, just like our hair, the more it is manipulated, the higher the risk of breakage and pulling hairs out.

Brushing reborn baby doll’s hair

Always use a soft bristle brush like the one that came with your baby.
Harder brushes may pull out baby’s hair and scratch the detailed painting on baby’s scalp.
If baby’s hair is just a little dusty or out of place, a gentle brushing will do the trick.

Washing reborn baby’s hair

Hair is most fragile when wet. So please wash with care.
Use a small amount of gentle baby shampoo, like the shampoo that came with your baby.
Wet the hair with WARM water (mohair felts in cold water).  Gently add the shampoo, but do not scrub or massage. This tangles the hair.  Instead, gently brush the shampoo through the hair until it lathers.
Rinse the brush and hair in warm water until all the shampoo is gone.  Blot dry (do not rub) with a soft towel.
Spray damp hair with your favorite leave-in conditioner.  (More info on conditioners in the Moisturize section below.)  Brush damp hair into desired style.  Allow to air dry.
